LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Area law enforcement officials will continue disposing dynamite Wednesday morning.

Tuesday night, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department posted on social media it will continue detonations at about 9 a.m. Wednesday with "about 20 more shots to go." There were 400 pounds of dynamite being disposed that started Tuesday morning.

The Sheriff's Department, along with the State Law Enforcement Division and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are in charge of the scheduled detonation. Explosive Ordnance Disposal technicians selected the site near Caney Branch Road in Leesville since it will not impact nearby homes, aside from the sound of the blasts, said Capt. Adam Myrick.

Myrick said discoveries of old dynamite are not uncommon in Lexington County, where explosives have been used in mining, agriculture and construction for decades.

Anyone who finds items they suspect might be explosives should not touch or move the material, leave the area and call 911.
