'I knew there were going to be bad injuries, so I worked my way back thinking they might need people to help carry people to ambulances, and they did,' he said, NBC News reported.

The impact crunched the front of the train's engine, smashed the truck, and left one person from inside the truck dead and at least five hospitalized - including Rep. Jason Lewis of Minnesota who was hospitalized for a concussion.

University of Virginia Health System tweeted just after 1pm that one of the patients was in critical condition while the others were still being evaluated.

Flake was among the many lawmakers who sprang into action to help the injured after the accident, helping lift one of the injured to an ambulance.

Lawmakers revealed some of the immediate damage in the minutes after the crash, which occurred Wednesday afternoon in Virginia.

'It was a hard impact. It threw everybody up in the air a little. I don't think anybody on the train is seriously injured, but I may be wrong,' Flake told the Post.

Flake said that several lawmakers who are doctors tended to the victims, including former podiatrist Rep. Brad Wenstrup (Ohio), former heart surgeon Rep. Larry Bucshon (Indiana) and former gastroenterologist Sen Bill Cassidy (Louisiana).

Wenstrup was called a hero after the Congressional baseball practice shooting last year, when he ran to the aid of Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who had been shot during a Congressional baseball practice outing.
