An afternoon walk turned deadly Monday when a man traversing railroad tracks in Suisun City was struck by an Amtrak train.
The man’s name was withheld pending notification of family, coroner’s officials said.
Events unfolded just before 1 p.m. along an industrial stretch of Railroad Avenue.
“A man was walking on the tracks headed westbound. The train was also headed westbound,” advised Commander Andrew White with the Suisun City Police Department. “Witnesses said the train (engineer) was honking the horn.”
Whether the man heard the horn was unclear, he said, as the victim apparently didn’t react to the sound.
“Witnesses did hear the horn,” White affirmed.
The pedestrian was struck by the Capitol Corridor train and came to rest along the tracks near a sound wall in the area of Worley Road.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police, Amtrak officials and staff dealing with the railroad crossing were on scene.
Coroner’s officials arrived later.
The train was delayed for more than two hours, according to the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority.
At press time, Amtrak had not responded to a request for comment.
Officials with Union Pacific Railroad said they were aiding in the investigation.
