Authorities ID 60-year-old man hit, killed by Amtrak train in southwest Birmingham

Authorities have released the name of a man killed when he was struck by a train in southwest Birmingham on Tuesday.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Perry Lewis Dandridge. He was 60.

Authorities said Dandridge was walking northbound on 17th Street Southwest near Harrison Park Recreation Center just after 3 p.m. when he was hit by the eastbound Amtrak passenger train heading toward Birmingham.

It's still unclear what led to him being struck, but it appeared he was walking across the tracks,  not along them. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:10 p.m.
