BALTIMORE (AP) — Amtrak has named a team to lead a long-discussed redevelopment of Baltimore’s century-old Penn Station.

The Baltimore Sun reports that the passenger railroad company is negotiating with a group called Penn Station Partners for a redevelopment plan that could see retail, residential and office projects around the revamped station.

Mayor Catherine Pugh describes the plans for Penn Station as a “historic opportunity.”

Among the proposals in preliminary blueprints is a new concourse built in what is now a parking lot.

The newspaper says that Amtrak expects ridership along the Northeast corridor to double by 2040.
