TEXARKANA, Texas – Texarkana City Council members unanimously approved joint support with their counterparts in Arkansas to redevelop the vacant, historic Union railroad station.
Planning and Community Development Director Vashil Fernandez said this is also a partnership with Amtrak. A grant application will be submitted to the state Department of Transportation for a little over $2 million.
Fernandez said the funding for the acquisition of Union Station includes the engineering and design of the project.
“I think this is certainly a great opportunity to restore one of our city icons, the train station,” said Mayor Bob Bruggemann. “It’s part of our history, it’s part of our beginning, and it’s very unique that the state line runs through that particular building as well, so I think those improvements are warranted.”
