Following our previous look at an opening for a Director of Residential Capital Planning at the University at Buffalo, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for an Architecture Archive Fellow at the University of Southern California.
The fellowship, based in Los Angeles, will support one designer or scholar in residence for an academic year. Applicants should be recent graduates wishing to pursue careers in academia and have a “demonstrated interest and are developing work related to social, racial, and cultural conditions within American cities.” The deadline for submissions is May 19th, 2025.
The open role at USC offers us the opportunity to take a closer look at an initiative dedicated to using archival material to inform future design discourse and advancement. The fellowship focused particularly on advancing research and teaching related to the work of architect Paul Revere Williams (1894–1980), with fellows expected to conduct original research using the Paul R. Williams Architecture Archive, co-owned by USC and the Getty Research Institute.
Acquired in 2020, the archive spans Williams’ six-decade career and contains over 37,000 materials, including architectural drawings, blueprints, renderings, photographs, correspondence, and professional documents. The archive offers a comprehensive insight into the career of one of the most prominent Black architects in American history, who was the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects and later its Gold Medal recipient.
As Archinect reported last year, the material had long sat unattended in storage in Los Angeles, before being recovered due to the efforts of USC faculty members and William’s granddaughter. The material is now housed in the Getty Center. Recently, the initiative received a $600,000 Mellon grant to help public programs for the archive, including the fellowship currently open for submissions.
In addition to research responsibilities, the successful fellow will teach or co-teach one academic course focused on the social dimensions of architecture and Williams’ legacy. Fellows will also produce a final written report, scholarly article, or exhibition reflecting on their research and its relevance to their practice.
