Spain weather warning for Irish holidaymakers as severe storms to impact travel

Spain's national meteorological agency, AEMET, has issued a series of weather alerts for torrential rain, thunderstorms and powerful winds, with some of the most popular holiday destinations set to be affected.

Irish holidaymakers jetting off to Spain are on high alert as they face severe weather warnings with dangerous storms expected to roll across the country.

Spain's national meteorological service, AEMET, has raised red flags for torrential rain, thunderstorms, and fierce gales that threaten to soak some of the most beloved tourist hotspots. Rainfall of up to 40mm per hour is forecast in certain areas, along with the risk of large hail and damaging gusts of wind.

AEMET has sent out a stark notice confirming: "Adverse weather on Saturday due to the formation of strong storms. We're expanding warnings to more areas in the north and east of the Peninsula. Showers will be locally very strong, with strong winds and hail. The danger is significant in the areas with an orange warning."

Status Yellow alerts are currently in place for areas including La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Cambrils, Valencia, Granada and Murcia. More severe Status Orange warnings have been issued for parts of the northern coastline and eastern inland regions, reports the Irish Mirror.

The prediction is pretty grim, with much of the northern half and eastern third of Spain prepared for torrential conditions. And for those in the Canary Islands aiming for higher grounds, a roaring southwesterly wind awaits.

AEMET has issued a statement saying: "Showers and thunderstorms with a chance of heavy rain and hail are expected in large areas of the northern half and eastern third of the Iberian Peninsula. Intervals of strong southwesterly winds with very strong gusts are expected in the higher elevation Canary Islands."
